Quick Facts

Best method for one carpet: International courier (DHL, FedEx, Aramex) — door-to-door, tracked, usually 3–7 days.

Typical cost from the UAE: Roughly AED 350–1,200 by courier for most hand-knotted rugs, depending on weight, size and destination.

Paperwork you need: A commercial invoice with provenance, your passport/ID copy, and the destination country's import rules checked in advance.

Packing: Roll (never fold) pile-side in, wrap in breathable cloth, then a waterproof outer sleeve — exactly how we prepare every piece at Al Malakia.

What we handle: From our Sharjah showroom we roll, document and book the courier for you, and arrange free Dubai pick-up so you never carry the carpet yourself.

Where: Shop 45–48, Central Souq Block 3 (Blue Souk), King Faisal Road, Sharjah, UAE — +971 50 537 2997.

You have found the carpet you love in Sharjah — a Tabriz medallion for a London flat, a Qum silk for a villa in Riyadh, a soft Afghan piece heading home to Europe. The next question is the practical one: how do you ship a carpet from the UAE safely, legally and without a nasty surprise at customs? It is a question we answer for visitors almost every week, because many of our buyers are tourists, returning expats and gift-givers who want the rug delivered to another country.

This guide walks through everything that matters: the right packing method, the choice between courier and air freight, realistic costs, the paperwork and customs questions, and what we take care of for you at Al Malakia so the whole thing is simple. None of it is complicated once you know the steps — and a hand-knotted carpet is one of the most travel-friendly valuables you can own.

Why Persian Carpets Ship So Well

Unlike furniture or ceramics, a hand-knotted carpet has no rigid parts to crack and no hollow spaces to crush. It is, in effect, a dense textile that has already survived being woven, washed, stretched and folded over months of production. Rolled correctly, it becomes a tight, sturdy cylinder that couriers handle with ease and that resists rough loading far better than most household goods.

That durability is also why carpets are such practical purchases for travellers. A piece from our collection can be bought in Sharjah today and arrive at a home in another country within the week, with no assembly, no fragile glass and no climate risk in transit. The main thing standing between you and a smooth delivery is correct preparation — which is exactly what this guide is about.

Step One: Pack It the Right Way

Bad packing is the single biggest cause of avoidable problems, so this matters more than any other step. The professional method is straightforward:

  • Roll, never fold. Folding creases the foundation and, over weeks in a box, can leave permanent lines. Always roll the carpet around its width so the finished cylinder is as short as possible.
  • Pile facing inward. Rolling with the pile (the soft surface) on the inside protects the knots from abrasion and keeps the back, which is tougher, on the outside.
  • Breathable inner wrap. A cotton or Tyvek-style cloth lets the wool breathe. Sealing wool in plastic for days can trap humidity — a real consideration in the Gulf climate.
  • Waterproof outer sleeve. Over the breathable layer, a heavy plastic or woven outer sleeve guards against rain and damp during international transit.
  • Tape the ends, label clearly. Secure both ends, mark the package as a textile/handicraft, and keep it clearly addressed.

For fine silk pieces such as Qum, we add extra protection because the knots are tiny and the sheen can mark. This is one reason we recommend letting the showroom pack delicate rugs: at Al Malakia every carpet leaves rolled to professional standard, and we have done it thousands of times. Step Two: Choose Courier or Air Freight

For a single carpet, you have two realistic options, and the right one depends on size, value and how many pieces you are sending.

International courier (best for most buyers)

DHL, FedEx and Aramex all collect from the UAE and deliver door-to-door worldwide. For one or two rugs this is almost always the right choice: it is tracked end-to-end, fast (typically 3–7 working days), and the courier handles export documentation. A standard 2×3 m wool carpet rolls down to a parcel these services accept without trouble.

Air freight (for large or multiple pieces)

If you are shipping a room-sized 4×6 m piece, several carpets together, or a high-value collection, air freight through a forwarder can work out more economical per kilo and gives you more control over insurance and customs handling. The trade-off is more paperwork and usually airport-to-airport rather than door-to-door, so you arrange the last leg yourself.

MethodBest forTypical speedDoor-to-door?
International courier1–2 carpets, most buyers3–7 working daysYes
Air freight (forwarder)Large, multiple or high-value pieces5–12 working daysUsually airport-to-airport
Sea freightWhole containers / relocations3–8 weeksPort-to-port

Sea freight only makes sense if your carpet is part of a full household relocation — for a single rug it is slow and rarely cheaper once handling is added.

A word on insurance

For an everyday Afghan or wool piece, the standard courier liability is usually adequate and most rugs arrive without incident. But for a fine silk Qum, a finely-knotted Tabriz, or any carpet running into several thousand dirhams and beyond — and our finest room-sized pieces can reach AED 200,000 — we strongly recommend declaring the full value and adding transit insurance. The premium is a small fraction of the carpet's worth, and it covers the rare cases of loss or damage in handling. We will help you set a fair declared value on the invoice so the cover matches what you actually paid.

Step Three: Understand the Costs

Shipping cost depends on three things: dimensional weight (rolled size, not just actual weight), the destination, and the speed you choose. As a realistic guide from the UAE:

  • Small to medium rugs (60×90 cm up to about 2×3 m): commonly AED 350–700 by courier to Europe, the GCC or South Asia.
  • Large rugs (up to 3×4 m): often AED 700–1,200 by courier, more to North America or Australia.
  • Room-sized and multiple pieces: usually better quoted as air freight; get a per-shipment price from a forwarder.

Two figures decide most of this: the rolled cylinder's length and girth (which set the dimensional weight) and the destination zone. A skilled roll that keeps the cylinder tight can meaningfully lower the bill, which is another reason professional packing pays for itself. We are always happy to weigh and measure a piece and give you a courier estimate before you commit — just ask, or contact us.

Step Four: Customs and Import Rules

This is the part buyers worry about most, and the honest answer is that it is usually straightforward — but the rules belong to the destination country, not the UAE. A few principles:

  • Export from the UAE is simple. Hand-knotted carpets are ordinary commercial goods leaving the country; the courier handles the export side.
  • Import duty depends on where it lands. Many countries apply a small duty and local sales tax (for example VAT) on the declared value. A genuine handmade carpet sometimes qualifies for reduced or zero duty as a handicraft — check your country's tariff for handmade textiles.
  • The commercial invoice matters. A clear invoice stating origin (e.g. Qum, Tabriz), that the piece is hand-knotted, and the price paid, makes customs clearance smooth and avoids over-valuation disputes.
  • Some countries restrict certain origins. A small number of destinations have rules around goods of Iranian origin. We will tell you honestly if your destination is one of them so there are no surprises.

We provide a proper provenance-stating invoice with every shipment, which is exactly the document customs officers want to see. If you are buying as a gift or for a second home abroad, mention the destination when you visit and we will flag anything you should check in advance.

Buying Now, Collecting or Shipping Later

Many of our visitors are mid-trip and do not want to carry a carpet for the rest of their holiday. You do not have to. You can choose your piece in the showroom, pay, and have us either hold it for later collection or ship it to your home address once you have travelled on. Tourists in particular value this: browse and decide in Sharjah, fly home unencumbered, and the carpet follows.

If you are based in Dubai and want to see pieces in person first, our Free Dubai-to-Sharjah Showroom Transfers mean you can visit without driving — we collect you, you choose, and we ship. And if you live in the capital, our Buying a Persian Carpet in Abu Dhabi: a Complete Guide explains the same options for Abu Dhabi buyers.

Shipping a Made-to-Order or Custom Carpet

Some buyers commission a carpet in a specific size or colourway and want it delivered abroad once it is ready. The shipping process is identical — roll, document, courier — but the timing is different, because the weaving itself takes time. If this interests you, our piece on Custom-Size & Made-to-Order Persian Carpets explains lead times and how the commission works, and we coordinate the shipping for you the moment the finished piece arrives in Sharjah.
