Every carpet on this page is hand-knotted, which means a weaver tied each knot individually around the warp threads. That is why the pattern is visible on the reverse side and why no two pieces are identical. Machine-made rugs cannot do this, and it is the first thing we show visitors at the showroom.
The name of the weaving city tells you what to expect. A Qum carpet is known for pure silk with very fine knotting, often 600 knots per square inch and above, which gives a Qum silk carpet its luminous surface and crisp detail. A Tabriz carpet has wool pile on a silk or cotton foundation, prized for medallion and hunting designs that suit large majlis and living rooms. An Isfahan carpet or a Nain carpet uses fine wool with silk highlights in ivory and blue palettes. A Kashan carpet is the classic red-and-navy floral design. Looked after properly, any of them becomes one of the heirloom Persian carpets a family passes on. Afghan pieces, woven by Turkmen and Baluch families, are heavier, warmer in colour and priced more accessibly.
